Matchday has arrived, and all roads lead to Barbourfields Stadium as Chicken Inn FC face Highlanders FC in a huge first-round Chibuku Super Cup Bulawayo Derby this afternoon.

For the Gamecocks, this is the moment to turn recent disappointment into determination. After being knocked out of the Munhumutapa Challenge Cup by Ngezi Platinum Stars on penalties following a goalless draw, Chicken Inn have little time to dwell on what happened. A completely different cup challenge now awaits, and this time the prize is a place in the next round — plus the chance to claim Bulawayo bragging rights.

Chicken Inn have shown plenty of fighting spirit in recent weeks. They defeated Manica 2-1 on July 11, followed that with a 1-0 away victory over Hunters on July 18, and then edged TelOne 1-0 on July 22. Their run was halted by a 2-1 defeat to Bulawayo Chiefs on August 1, before they produced a disciplined display against Ngezi, holding the PSL title contenders to 0-0 over 90 minutes before losing 5-4 in the shootout.

That performance against Ngezi should give the Gamecocks belief heading into today's derby. They competed strongly against one of the country's leading sides and showed that they can remain organised under pressure. What Chicken Inn will want today is to add the cutting edge that was missing in that cup encounter.

Highlanders arrive with their own point to prove after suffering a major Munhumutapa Challenge Cup shock. Bosso were held 0-0 by Division One Southern Region side Blackrock before being beaten 5-3 on penalties. It was a painful elimination for Highlanders, and they will be desperate to respond against their biggest local rivals.

But Chicken Inn must make sure Bosso's disappointment does not become their advantage.

That meeting was originally scheduled for July 26 but was postponed following the tragic passing of Highlanders Chairman and PSL Vice Chairman Retired Colonel Kenneth Mhlophe, Vice Chairman Sifiso Siziba and Treasurer Nkani Khoza.

So today's Chibuku Super Cup clash effectively opens a massive week of Bulawayo Derby football, with the two rivals set to meet again in the league just three days later.

For Chicken Inn, victory today would be the perfect way to start that sequence.

The Gamecocks also have something to prove after losing the earlier league meeting 3-1 to Highlanders. Chicken Inn will therefore be looking to turn that disappointment into motivation and show that they can get the better of Bosso when it matters.

Today's match is not about what happened in the past, though.
