Chicken Inn FC continued their growing defensive resilience at Barbourfields Stadium on Wednesday, 10 June, as they held CAPS United FC to a hard-earned 0-0 draw in Matchday 17 of the Castle Lager Premier Soccer League, registering another clean sheet in front of their home supporters.
Coming off a previous goalless draw in Matchday 16, the Gamecocks once again demonstrated improved organisation at the back, showing consistency in their defensive structure as they frustrated a strong CAPS United side that arrived in Bulawayo with confidence after a 3-2 win over ZPC Kariba.
The hosts were disciplined from the opening minutes, absorbing early pressure from CAPS United who looked to control possession through midfield and create openings in the final third. However, Chicken Inn remained compact and alert, cutting out attacks before they could develop into clear scoring opportunities.
CAPS United did enjoy spells of pressure, particularly in the first half, but found it difficult to break down a well-drilled Chicken Inn defence. When chances did arrive, the Gamecocks stood firm, with goalkeeper Mvula once again delivering a commanding performance between the posts.
One of the key moments of the match came when Mvula produced a crucial save to deny CAPS United striker Benhura, keeping the Gamecocks level at a time when the visitors looked dangerous. His composure under pressure played a major role in securing yet another clean sheet for the Bulawayo side.
Chicken Inn also showed attacking intent of their own, especially from set pieces. Corners and free kicks created pressure inside the CAPS United box, with headers and second balls forcing the visitors’ defence into repeated clearances. Although the breakthrough never came, the Gamecocks looked threatening at key moments.
In the second half, Chicken Inn made tactical changes to inject energy into the attack, introducing Innocent and Hapmo. The substitutions added pace and movement in forward areas, allowing the hosts to transition more effectively while maintaining their defensive shape.
As CAPS United pushed forward in search of a winner, Chicken Inn’s defensive unit stood tall. The backline remained organised, clearing dangerous balls and limiting space in crucial areas as the match entered its final stages.
Late efforts from both sides failed to change the scoreline, including a long-range attempt from Kawe that tested the CAPS United goalkeeper but did not produce a goal.
At full-time, Chicken Inn walked away with another clean sheet and a valuable point, marking a strong defensive response following their previous draw in Matchday 16. While the Gamecocks would have hoped for more in attack, the consistency at the back will be seen as a positive step forward.
